Understand the Market Like Never Before
A market profile is a tool used in technical analysis to understand and visualize the structure of a market, often applied in the context of trading. It provides insights into price distribution over a given time period, helping traders gauge market sentiment and make more informed decisions.
The concept is derived from auction market theory and focuses on the concept that markets move in cycles of value discovery, with price levels that are more frequently traded forming a profile. The most common way of representing this profile is through market profile charts, which show:
Key Elements:
TPOs (Time Price Opportunities): Indicate the amount of time spent at a specific price level.
Value Area: Price levels where 70% of the volume occurred during the period.
Point of Control (POC): The price level with the highest volume within the profile.
Balance and Imbalance: A balance indicates a consolidation phase, while an imbalance signals a breakout or trend.
Price Distribution
The horizontal axis represents time, and the vertical axis represents price levels. The shape of the profile indicates which prices were most actively traded.
Value Area
This represents the range of prices where a significant portion of trading volume occurred, typically around 70%. The value area shows where most market participants believe the fair value of the asset lies.
Point of Control (POC)
This is the price level with the highest volume traded during the selected time period. It represents the level of greatest market consensus and can act as support or resistance.
Initial Balance (IB)
This is the range between the highest and lowest price during the first part of the trading session (often the first hour). The behavior of the market relative to this range can indicate whether the market is trending or consolidating.
TPO (Time Price Opportunities)
Each price point within a given period is represented as a letter or symbol, indicating where the price spent time. This helps create a visual representation of how long the market stayed at each price level.
